This module is aimed at healthcare workers employed within mental health and AOD services and other professionals interested in this area of healthcare. It begins with important definitions and terminology, then discusses why people might use various substances and some common co-occurring mental health and AOD conditions. This overview is followed by six lessons addressing the following learning objectives:
Explain the importance of integrated treatment for co-occurring AOD and mental health conditions.
Recognise different models explaining substance misuse and addiction.
Recognise different AOD treatment approaches within the integrated care environment.
Understand the Stages of Change Model and how this can be applied to support people in their treatment journey.
Understand the impact of AOD use on the brain and body and identify important medication interactions relevant to treatment.
Recognise different ways to support families and carers.
Each lesson provides information, learning activities, and the opportunity to reflect on your practice.
There is a case vignette and questions at the end of the module. This section is designed to be worked on individually or in a team environment. References are provided at the end of each lesson. You have the flexibility to advance through the module at your own pace. Your progress will be saved; you can return when it suits you.
Each module provides approximately 1.5 hours of learning. It may be claimed as CPD with a letter of completion (please reach out to the Education Team at [email protected] for this), provided the modules:
Align with your scope of practice.
Address the learning goals as specified in a learning plan developed through your association.
Meet registration/association standards and requirements.
