Overview
Exposure to traumatic events — such as threatened death or serious injury — and the emotional response to such events (trauma) have been associated with substance use and the development of addiction. It is estimated that approximately 15% to 50% of individuals seeking treatment for a substance use disorder also meet the diagnostic criteria for co-occurring post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
This research brief explores the connection between trauma and addiction, the importance of integrated treatment for co-occurring PTSD and substance use disorders, and effective psychological interventions. It also provides an overview of PTSD and complex PTSD, highlighting key distinctions and implications for care.
